Independent sponsor capital providers differ in more than check size. Some invest equity alongside a lead investor; others combine equity with junior debt or expect a larger role in the transaction. This CapitalPad directory compares their investment sizes, company criteria, and partnership terms.
Select a firm below to view its criteria. Amounts are in U.S. dollars; equity checks are identified separately from combined debt-and-equity investments.

How to compare capital-provider mandates
Before approaching a capital provider, confirm that its investment size, role, and terms fit the acquisition:
- Allocation and role: total equity required, the open allocation, and whether the investor would lead, co-lead, or follow.
- Security mix: equity-only participation or a package that includes subordinated debt, preferred securities, or a required lending relationship.
- Economics and governance: sponsor fees and promote, reserved matters, board composition, exit provisions, and any rights specific to the new investor.
- Execution and follow-on capital: the path to investment committee approval, remaining diligence, funding conditions, and capacity for planned add-ons.
A firm’s maximum investment capacity says little about its fit for the remaining allocation. Its minimum check and the role it expects can be more decisive.
Equity capital providers
The firms below invest equity in sponsor-led acquisitions. Their check sizes, ownership preferences, and expectations of the sponsor’s role differ.
CapitalPad
CapitalPad is an equity investment partner for independent sponsors. CapitalPad invests $1 million to $2.5 million of equity per transaction, taking minority positions alongside independent sponsors in lower middle market businesses in the United States and Canada.
- Equity investment: $1 million to $2.5 million per transaction.
- Company EBITDA: $1 million and above.
- Enterprise value: $5 million and above.
- Geography: United States and Canada.
- Transaction types: Acquisitions, recapitalizations, and buy-and-build strategies.
- Investment role: Minority equity partner.1
CapitalPad’s investment committee evaluates each opportunity based on the business, investment thesis, and transaction structure. The independent sponsor leads the acquisition and post-close strategy.1
Trident
The current mandate targets majority positions in U.S. companies, with $25 million to $50 million of equity and $2 million to $20 million of EBITDA.12 The firm has backed independent sponsors; its current operating-partner model involves originating acquisitions and leading the business as an executive or active board member.13, 12
Additional capital providers
The firms below provide equity, debt, or a combination for sponsor-led acquisitions. Published ranges may describe an equity check or a combined financing package; confirm the security mix, equity allocation, and effect on leverage for the proposed transaction.
Merit Capital Partners
Merit’s published investment size starts at $20 million, with company thresholds of $20 million in revenue and $4 million in EBITDA. It combines meaningful equity ownership, whether control or non-control, with subordinated debt carrying a current yield. Manufacturing and service businesses are central to the mandate.4
Partnership approach: Merit is comfortable with the independent sponsor leading the transaction and management relationship, while Merit supplies the required equity and subordinated debt. Its criteria describe board-level involvement rather than day-to-day operating responsibility.5, 4
Key requirements: experienced management, strong cash flow, an established industry, and growing market share. Its published exclusions include startups, turnarounds, real estate financing, restaurants, and oil and gas exploration.4
Ironwood Capital
Ironwood publishes a $10 million to $50 million investment range, generally targeting companies with $4 million to $25 million or more of EBITDA and $20 million to $250 million or more of revenue. It invests junior debt and minority equity, including subordinated debt, preferred equity, and common equity.6
Partnership approach: Ironwood works with both funded and independent sponsors. It looks for proven management teams with meaningful ownership, stable historical cash flow, visible future cash generation, and opportunities for organic and acquisitive growth. Its mandate suits transactions needing a larger junior-capital package alongside management and sponsor ownership.6
Centerfield Capital Partners
Centerfield’s junior-capital strategy targets $7 million to $40 million investments, with larger amounts possible through co-investment partners. Its U.S. company criteria include $3 million to $15 million of EBITDA and margins generally above 10%. Securities include subordinated debt and common or preferred equity.7
Partnership approach: Centerfield expects the independent sponsor to lead the investment process, post-close strategy implementation, and interaction with management. It seeks partners with a successful record of managing and exiting investments. Centerfield can also solicit senior financing proposals through its bank LP network.7
This is a junior-capital mandate with equity participation. Centerfield’s separate control-equity strategy has its own parameters.
Aldine Capital Partners
Aldine’s current fund summary lists investments of $5 million to $30 million, company revenue of at least $10 million, and EBITDA of at least $2 million. It combines subordinated debt and equity, including minority and majority ownership positions, and explicitly identifies independent sponsors among its investment partners.8
Key requirements: its investment criteria seek at least three years of successful operating history. The strategy generally purchases fixed-rate subordinated notes with equity or other upside participation. Aldine excludes real estate, banking and lending, and turnarounds.9
Capitala Group
Capitala’s independent sponsor program targets investments of $10 million to $50 million in companies with $3 million to $20 million of EBITDA. Its mandate spans debt, equity, and hybrid structures, primarily for U.S. businesses across industries.14
Partnership approach: Capitala can provide unitranche debt and equity within one financing package. Its published range is the total transaction investment, so sponsors should establish the proposed equity allocation, leverage, and governance together.14
Tecum Capital Partners
Tecum’s junior-capital strategy invests $5 million to $20 million through mezzanine debt, minority equity, and opportunistic control equity. It explicitly includes independent sponsor buyouts, targeting companies with $3 million to $10 million of EBITDA and $10 million to $100 million of revenue.15
Key requirements: primary operations in the U.S., EBITDA margins above 10%, and gross leverage below 4.0x EBITDA. Target sectors include business services, healthcare services, industrial services, manufacturing, and distribution. These criteria apply to Tecum’s junior-capital strategy; its separate control-equity strategy has different parameters.15
Route 2 Capital Partners
Route 2 Capital Partners invests $5 million to $25 million per company through mezzanine debt and equity. It targets businesses with at least $2 million of EBITDA and identifies independent sponsor transactions among its investment types.16
Investment focus: business services, consumer products and services, and niche manufacturing, with a preference for companies in the Southern U.S. Route 2 finances both sponsored and non-sponsored transactions, including acquisitions, growth, and recapitalizations.16
Northcreek Mezzanine
Northcreek invests $1 million to $12 million in U.S. companies with at least $1 million of EBITDA and $5 million of revenue. Its strategy generally involves non-control mezzanine debt and equity co-investments across industries.17
Partnership approach: Northcreek works with independent sponsors, search fund sponsors, other financial sponsors, and private companies. It finances acquisitions, growth, recapitalizations, and refinancings. The published range covers its debt and equity investment, rather than a standalone equity check.17
Align Collaborate
For U.S. companies with $2 million to $15 million of EBITDA and enterprise values of $15 million to $150 million, the published equity range is $10 million to $40 million. Participation can cover 25% to 100% of the equity requirement, alongside other investors or as the sole equity provider.11
Ocean Avenue Capital Partners
The stated equity range is $10 million to $25 million for U.S. and Canadian companies with $3 million to $15 million of EBITDA. Both majority and minority positions are considered, including platform builds, carve-outs, and turnarounds.2 The sponsor originates the opportunity and leads the investment before and after closing. The published terms include a board-observer role without a required board seat and hurdled economics.2, 3
Concentric Investment Partners
Concentric targets $5 million to $20 million investments in U.S. companies with $3 million to $20 million of EBITDA and can lead transactions as large as $50 million. Available securities include unitranche debt, subordinated debt, preferred equity, and common equity.18
Partnership approach: independent sponsors are among its stated partners, alongside private equity funds, family offices, and search funds. Its mandate covers buyouts, acquisitions, refinancings, minority recapitalizations, and growth capital. Concentric excludes real estate, startups, and turnarounds.18
Farragut Capital Partners
Farragut provides debt and minority equity to lower middle market companies, including independent sponsor acquisitions. Its 2026 brochure lists investments of $4 million to $15 million, with larger amounts available alongside co-investors, and targets U.S. companies with $2 million to $15 million of EBITDA.19
Investment focus: asset-light businesses in services, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and consumer sectors. Farragut can invest subordinated debt, unitranche debt, and preferred or common equity. The ranges shown here follow its 2026 brochure; its website publishes a lower minimum investment.19, 20
Which capital providers can fill a minority equity allocation?
CapitalPad invests $1 million to $2.5 million of minority equity per independent sponsor transaction in lower middle market businesses. CapitalPad’s mandate can fit an open allocation alongside a lead investor, with customary minority protections and no board seat requirement.1
For an acquisition requiring $7.5 million of equity, a $5.5 million lead commitment leaves a $2 million co-investment allocation. The relevant questions are whether the co-investor can accept the proposed economics and governance, complete diligence within the timetable, and support any expected follow-on funding.
Published investment ranges also need to be read by security type. A junior-capital provider’s $5 million financing package may combine debt and equity; it does not necessarily represent $5 million of available equity. Confirm the proposed equity amount and any associated debt requirements.
The same check size may anchor a smaller transaction or complete a larger equity round. Establish the investor’s intended role before negotiating terms.
Who provides capital to independent sponsors?
Family offices are the capital source independent sponsors cite most often. In Citrin Cooperman’s 2026 survey, 69% of sponsor respondents cited family offices, followed by SBIC funds (61%), high-net-worth individuals (44%), and mezzanine funds that co-invest (35%).10

Source: Citrin Cooperman, 2026 Independent Sponsor Report, pages 4 and 22–23. The March 2026 online survey included 187 professionals, of whom 158 identified as independent sponsors. Follow-up interviews took place in April. Percentages describe respondents citing each source, not shares of invested dollars.10
Which capital sources most often lead independent sponsor transactions?
In the 2026 Citrin Cooperman survey data summarized in CapitalPad’s independent sponsor statistics report, SBIC funds were the most commonly identified lead investors, at 26%, followed by family offices at 21%. Family offices ranked first in overall capital-source usage. A capital partner can participate in a transaction without leading its financing.10

The same report found that 53% of sponsor respondents often used repeat funding relationships.10 That supports building a roster of partners for different check sizes and transaction structures, rather than expecting one mandate to fit every acquisition. Our guide to how independent sponsors raise capital covers how sponsors sequence equity, debt, and closing.
What to include in a capital partner submission
Lead with the transaction, the equity request, and the proposed role. A useful opening identifies company EBITDA, enterprise value, total equity required, allocations already agreed, and whether the recipient is being asked to lead or follow. Include LOI status and the target closing date.
The investment memorandum should cover historical financials and adjustments, sources and uses, the debt financing plan, sponsor background and relevant track record, the value creation plan, proposed sponsor economics, and material diligence findings. Flag the status of QoE, lender approval, and definitive documents so the counterparty can assess the remaining work.
For CapitalPad, submit an established business under LOI with the investment memorandum and proposed terms. Submit a transaction to CapitalPad for investment review.
For debt financing, see our independent sponsor lender directory.
